What if the very things we're doing to fix our problems are actually making them worse?
Pastor Andy finished his 2-part sermon this week on spiritual blindness. Spiritual blindness is one of Scripture’s most serious realities. The Bible teaches that blindness is a universal human condition, a darkness that keeps us from comprehending God’s truth unless God Himself intervenes (Mark 8:18; 1 Corinthians 2:14). We sometimes cannot see His son Jesus. The inability to recognize Christ even when he stands right in front of us, just as many in Jesus’ day walked where he walked yet never truly saw him at all (John 9:39–41; 2 Corinthians 4:4). Blindness hardens the heart, producing stubbornness, rejection, and a tragic resistance to God’s voice (Isaiah 6:9–10; Romans 1:21). It shows up in twisted teaching, where false voices distort Scripture and lead people away from Jesus (Matthew 23:16–17; 2 Peter 2:1). And perhaps most dangerously, blindness convinces people they see clearly when they are actually lost in darkness, confident self‑deception that keeps them from seeking help (Revelation 3:17; John 9:41).
But blindness is not permanent. Only Godly initiative can cure it. God gave us His son to illuminate. Jesus gives sight, he creates new eyes where none existed before (John 9:25). Only the Holy Spirit can expose lies, defeat deception, and lead people into the light of truth (Acts 13:9; John 16:13).
Last week we talked about Indias cobra problem and how sometimes solutions can make things worse than the problem. The Cobra Effect offers a vivid picture of this blindness. Officials misdiagnosed the real problem, treating symptoms instead of the disease, just as spiritually blind people misread the heart (Jeremiah 17:9; Mark 8:18). Their solution made things worse, breeding cobras that multiplied the danger. Just as blind hearts create self‑destructive spiritual solutions (Romans 1:22; Matthew 23:15). When the program collapsed, breeders released cobras into the streets, unleashing destruction, just as blind people release bitterness, pride, fear, and false doctrine into their lives (John 9:41; 2 Peter 2:19). The cycle only broke when the false solution was exposed, a reminder that spiritual blindness ends when truth confronts deception, the Spirit opens eyes, and Christ is revealed.
This blindness shows up in everyday life. Families often breed “cobras” by avoiding conflict, hiding sin, or pretending everything is fine. People struggling with sin create solutions that multiply their problems, isolation, secrecy, avoidance. Those in pain misdiagnose the real issue, treating circumstances instead of the heart. Parents release anger, fear, or shame into their homes without realizing it. Couples fight each other instead of the lies that fuel their conflict. Yet blindness is never the end of the story. Elymas tried to keep Sergius Paulus blind, but God opened his eyes, and the gospel prevailed. It still does.
So here is the challenge for the whole church: “Lord, show me where I am breeding cobras.” And here is the prayer: “Open my eyes.” And here is the step: Replace the lie with truth. Jesus stops the cycle. Jesus breaks the blindness. Jesus gives sight.
We had a fantastic Fall Festival with close to 400 in attendance. We had a chili contest, trunks with games and candy, cakewalk, silent auction, bouncy houses and much more. It was a great night. Thank you to everyone who participated. If you came from the community, you were prayed for and would love to see you at church anytime.
