Proverbs 14:34 -“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.” “God Bless America” is sung, printed, and spoken everywhere on July 4th. But biblically, God does not bless nations simply because they ask. He blesses nations that honor Him, obey Him, and repent before Him. This sermon explained what “God Bless America” means according to Scripture and how righteousness exalts a nation.

The cry “God bless America” rises often, but rarely with any concern for the conditions God Himself has established for blessing. We want protection, prosperity, safety, and freedom, but not repentance, holiness, or obedience. We want God’s favor without God’s authority. Scripture is clear: blessing is never unconditional. It is always tied to repentance, obedience, and submission to His Word.

Nehemiah 8-9 gives us the pattern. Israel had endured seventy years of divine judgment in Babylon. When the curse lifted and the people returned to their land, they did not begin with rebuilding walls or cities, they began by bringing the book. They gathered as one, asking Ezra to read the Law of Moses. From morning until midday, the people stood attentively as Scripture was read and explained. This was the birth of expository preaching: reading the Word and giving the sense so the people could understand. Blessing begins not with national pride, but with opening the Scriptures.

As the Word was read day after day, conviction followed. In chapter 9, the people assembled with fasting, sackcloth, and dirt on their heads, outward signs of inward humiliation. They confessed their sins and the sins of their fathers. They separated themselves from ungodliness. For a fourth of the day, they listened to the Word; for another fourth they confessed and worshiped. This is the posture God blesses: a people broken over sin, submitted to His truth, and ready to obey.

Israel was a covenant nation with everlasting promises, yet even they could not be blessed without repentance and obedience. How much more true for America, which has no national covenant, no divine guarantee, no promise of preservation. We are not a chosen nation; we are simply one among many. If Israel required repentance to receive blessing, we should never imagine the standard is lower for us.

Our forefathers built this nation on Christian principles, but heritage cannot substitute for holiness. The only path to blessing is the one Scripture has always given: bring the book, hear the Word, confess sin, turn to God, and submit to His law. Without repentance, national prayers for blessing are empty. With repentance, God may yet show mercy.

May God grant us the humility to return to His Word, the honesty to confess our sin, and the courage to obey, for only then are we in a position to be blessed. We hope you had a wonderful fourth of July weekend and enjoyed celebrating with your family and friends.
