This week Pastor Andy titled his sermon “You Have a Choice”. What kind of choice do we have? You hear people say all the time “I had no choice” or “it was out of my hands”. The Bible never treats human choice as an illusion. From Pharaoh in Exodus to Jesus’ warnings in the Gospels, Scripture shows that every heart responds to God, either softening or hardening. The story of Pharaoh reveals this clearly: before God ever hardened his heart, Pharaoh hardened his own again and again. He enslaved Israel, murdered infants, resisted truth, and rejected mercy. Only after repeated refusals did God confirm the direction Pharaoh had already chosen. The same sun that melts wax hardens clay; God’s presence reveals what is already inside a person. Moses grew softer under God’s voice, while Pharaoh grew harder. Same God, two responses. The plagues didn’t make Pharaoh who he was, they exposed who he had already decided to be.

Scripture teaches that believers also face a real choice in how they respond to God. Salvation is God’s gift, but perseverance is our calling. Jesus said, “The one who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 24:13). A branch must remain in the vine, or it will wither (John 15:5–6). Paul himself lived with discipline so he would not be disqualified (1 Corinthians 9:27). Believers in Galatia were warned that they could fall from grace (Galatians 5:4). Hebrews warns that deliberate sin after receiving truth leads to judgment (Hebrews 10:26–29). Peter describes people who escaped corruption through Christ but later returned to it (2 Peter 2:20–22). Jesus promises to never blot out the names of those who conquer, implying that names can be blotted out if they do not (Revelation 3:5). Paul urges us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12). James reminds us that faith must endure and bear fruit (James 2:24). And Jesus promises the crown of life to those who remain faithful unto death (Revelation 2:10).

The Bible’s message is clear: God calls, God convicts, God empowers, but we respond. Pharaoh’s story warns us that repeated choices shape the heart. Jesus’ teaching reminds us that perseverance is not optional. Today, you have a choice. Soften your heart. Remain in Christ. Walk faithfully. The God who calls you will also strengthen you to endure. Salvation involves a genuine human response to God’s grace.
