This Sunday our church observed Grandparents Day. This special event was first proclaimed in 1978. The goal was to honor grandparents for their love, guidance, and role in children’s lives. We chose to celebrate by having a youth led service. The theme was Grandparents and how they honor us and how we can honor them. We used this theme to reflect on the spiritual and relational responsibilities of grandparenting. First, we need to honor the role:

·       Grandparents provide stability and security for the family

·       Grandparents provide identity of the family and faith

·       Grandparents provide spiritual continuity for the family

We honored several grandparents in the service. Some were the oldest grandparents, some had the most grandchildren, and some had served the longest in the church. We handed out fruit-based prizes to mirror the fruit that was grown in people’s lives they had touched. We sang songs and read scripture. We did a skit and each youth took part of the service and led those areas. We are very proud of our youth for what they did this week.

Several shared different thoughts on what grandparents mean to them. This is a little bit of what they shared. Grandparents are one of God’s quiet, steady gifts to a family. Living reminders of His faithfulness across generations. Scripture paints a beautiful picture of their role: “One generation shall praise Your works to another and shall declare Your mighty acts” (Psalm 145:4). Grandparents carry stories of God’s provision, lessons learned through trials, and wisdom shaped by years of walking with Christ. Their presence anchors a family, offering stability in a world that constantly shifts. In Proverbs 17:6 we read, “Children’s children are the crown of old men,” a reminder that grandchildren are not only a joy but also a calling, an opportunity to invest spiritually in the next generation. When grandparents pray over their families, speak blessings, share Scripture, or simply model Christlike character, they plant seeds that often grow long after their own season has passed. Their influence is rarely loud, but it does last. Today, thank God for the grandparents in your life, whether present or remembered, and ask Him to help all grandparents live out their calling with grace, strength, and a heart that points every generation to Jesus.
